Two days after Christmas both my son and I came down with a cold. While it was annoying for me (I missed a few runs and a day of work because of it), it wasn’t so bad because I can do things a four month old cannot: blow my nose, take medicine, and pretty much sleep on demand. I can’t say it was as easy on my son. His treatment required frequent saline sprays, “bulbings” (big blue bulb sucking the snot out of his nose), and lots and lots of being held and soothed.
Most affected I think was his ability to sleep well. Because he was having so much trouble breathing, his sleep was frequently interrupted, waking screaming and then screaming some more when we tried to clear his nose. Let’s be honest, who wants to wake up at 2 in the morning to have a giant blue bulb suck snot out of your nose? Not this guy. Thankfully, however, we learned this past week that he would sleep much better while sitting reclined in his vibrating chair. However, this had the unintended side affect of exploding diaper syndrome. Yay for more laundry!
So we decided that come the weekend we were going to go cold turkey on the vibrating chair, and whatever long sleepless night was ahead of us, we were determined to get him sleeping in his crib again. But then, miraculously what to my wondering eyes did appear, but the Magic Sleepsuit we ordered from Baby Merlin!
What, you ask, is this Magic Sleepsuit of what you speak? According to their website:
The Magic Sleepsuit™ is an innovative baby sleepwear product that provides babies with a cozy, calming, and safe sleep environment. The Magic Sleepsuit is designed for babies who have become too big for swaddling, yet still need that warmth and contained feeling to aid in their sleep. The Magic Sleepsuit is designed to be used for back sleeping in the crib.
My wife read about this the other day so we said, why not give it a try? So after unpacking and washing it, we figured what better time than the present to try it out. After feeding him, we slipped him into it while in his crib. It is thick and snug, but has great breathability as to not overheat the baby. In all honesty he looked a little like the younger brother from The Christmas Story all wrapped up and unable to move, but he seemed comfortable enough so off to bed we went, wondering what the night held in store.
And then, just like that, it was 7:00 a.m. Had he really slept through the night? Like any new parent, I rushed into the bedroom to make sure he was still alive. Sure enough, there he was, awake, smiling, seemingly very happy to have slept all night long. Much more happy were my wife and I, particularly my wife who hasn’t had a full night sleep in over 9 months!
So, do I think the Magic Sleepsuit was the “magic” behind the full night sleep? Only time will tell. I will say this though…at only $40 it was much easier and cheaper than sending him off to Grammy’s so we could get a full night sleep at a hotel! So for that, I think you Magic Sleepsuit!

Several of my kids took a long time to sleep through the night. On-demand breastfeeding and co-sleeping probably had something to do with it. Then I discovered the “put-the-kid-in-the-crib” trick. It worked. Didn’t even need to try CIO. Who knew? Baby slept through the night at 6 weeks. I got major mastitis but getting good sleep made it worth it. I’m all for whatever works. If it’s a pricey sleeping snowsuit, so be it. Have fun with your cute baby.
