Everyone meet this month’s dad, 35-year-old Will Adams from San Jose, CA, a TV newscast director for NBC Bay Area. Will is a proud father of two children, a 14-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl.
(On running) I would say try to run when you don’t take away from family time.
(On inspiring your kids) Spend time with your kids in their realm, whether it be sports or playtime or whatever. Most importantly, make it fun.
How and when did you get involved in running?
I got into running to lose weight…but before long it morphed into running races. My first races were Turkey Trots and an 11K. Earlier this year I ran my first half marathon!
What is your proudest running moment?
Running a marathon this past October, I hurt my calf within the first hour but still finished at a respectable 4:16:53.
How do you inspire your kids to run and/or exercise?
Running/working out has inspired my kids to want to run around the block and play sports. They see me go out and run and tell their friends, which gets them excited to really stay active.
How are you an inspiration to others?
Since I have been running so much I have gotten a few co-workers running. My wife has started doing 5k’s as well. The whole family did the Turkey Trot this past year, and we had a blast!
What is your proudest parenting moment?
With two kids I’ll have to split my proud moment between the two. My son became the leader of his JV football team as a freshman. My daughter is a leader on her baseball team and hit a grand slam!!
What is your funniest parenting story?
It would probably be walking through the house we currently live in when we were prospective renters. My son slipped away and came back and told me he went #2 in the main bathroom. We of course found out that the water had been turned off and the toilet wouldn’t flush!!! Despite that mishap, we got the place and we have lived here for 9 years.
What advice would you give to running dad’s out there?
I would say try to run when you don’t take away from family time. I work a 3pm to midnight shift so I try to go after work and/or go when they are in school. Listen to your kids and try not to yell at them so much even when you are tired and want to sleep. Make sports fun and don’t be “that” parent who embarrasses their kids by yelling in the stands at them…I know from experience. Spend time with your kids in their realm, whether it be sports or playtime or whatever. Most importantly, make it fun.
